Lonnie Hughes stand just off the curb in front of his home in Sherman Park. He talks with a friend as he leans on the handle of a broom, his right hand covered by a tattered work glove.
“When I moved to this neighborhood, it was a fantastic—well, it’s still a great neighborhood,” he says. “People agree, neighbors get along great.”
Norma Wheeler sits on the front port of her home in Williamsburg Heights. Wheeler raised all of her children in the house, located on a one-way strip of 2nd Street, where she’s lived for more than 50 years.
“I’ve been livin’ in Milwaukee all of my adult life. I raised all of my kids here, in this particular house, and I get along with my neighbors pretty good,” she says.
Brandi Elam walks down a quiet, sunlit stretch of West McKinley Boulevard in Cold Spring Park, earbuds in, music playing. Elam, who was born in Milwaukee, grew up near 76th and Hampton.
“It was kind of dangerous. Every now and again, my grandma would get robbed in the alley or something,” she says.
